Building the Pool and Spa of your Dreams

by Ian Phillips

The 2018 year is already on its way and before we know it, summer will be upon us. For many people, especially in the Los Angeles area, having a pool and spa at your disposal is the ultimate dream. However, before undertaking such a task you should know, planning, building and maintaining a swimming pool or spa is not a whim. It is a major addition to your house. Having a body of water in your back yard dramatically alters the landscape of your outdoor living space. Though a pool does provide more entertainment, more family fun, and more exercise. One should be aware of all aspects before taking the dive.

Why do you want a pool or spa? Sit down with all the members of your family and ask them why do you want a pool or spa. It is important that everyone is on the same page and understands what they want, and do not want, in a pool.

What will the pool be used for? Do you plan on swimming laps? Or do you have visions of entertaining guests in and around your pool? Is it for your children and their friends? Determine who in your household will use the pool, and what it will be used for.

What type of pool are you interested in? There’s a vast sea of styles out there: lap pool, recreational swimming pool, infinity pool, natural pool, saltwater pool, to name a few. There’s all kinds of shapes, sizes and combinations. This is one of the fun aspects of the project, it’s like going “pool shopping.” Research books, magazine, and the internet.

What size and shape? If you have a large estate you will not have as much of a problem finding a place to put your pool. However, for must of us with smaller lots, it may take some creativity, special design and compromise to make a swimming pool or spa work in your space.

What’s my budget? It is important to set a budget that you are comfortable spending and then not budge. Financing a swimming pool project is like any other home addition, so make sure to communicate how much you are looking to spend with your builder so he can hold you to it.

Maintenance, maintenance, maintenance. Heaters, chlorine, bromine, pumps, pool vacuums, test kits—the list of chores is endless. Are you up for the time commitment and monthly costs of maintaining your pool? Can you afford to hire a monthly pool maintenance service to do the dirty work for you? Research local rates and get smart about all that’s entailed in maintaining a swimming pool, spa or hot tub.
